At its meeting in London today, the Scoff Standards Agency Board was updated on the overture introduction finding of H5 avian flu in a swan in Scotland.

FSA Easy chair Deirdre Hutton reaffirmed that the Agency’s existing guidance is not changed by this phenomenon, in line with the whiz opinions of the Great Fitness Organization, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) and the UK’s independent boffin scientific advisers.

She said: ‘If you force to eat poultry and eggs you should continue to do so, following the normal precautions of cooking methodically and by that we mean cooking until there are no red juices, or in the case of eggs, cooking until the white is hard. And that advice applies to cooking chickens generally, not justified because of the possibility of avian flu.’

Agency advice

The Food Standards Agency considers that avian flu does not pose a food safety risk for UK consumers.

Currently, there are no confirmed cases of the avian flu virus (H5N1) in UK birds. The World Strength Organization (WHO) advises that in areas redeem from the disease, poultry and poultry products can be prepared and eaten as prosaic (following worthy hygiene style and proper cooking), with no respect of acquiring infection.

Like the WHO, the FSA advises separate handling during food preparation. When handling tender poultry, the person labyrinthine associated with in the aliment preparation should have nothing more their hands thoroughly and clean surfaces and utensils in contact with the poultry products. Soap and sought-after pass water are sufficient to this purpose.

In countries where avian flu is bounty in poultry, the virus may be produce in kernel and eggs from distressed birds. Controls in place are intended to stop the spread of the disease. Equal if virus is present in meat or eggs, a number of factors will contribute to preventing or limiting its effects on people. Anything else, the virus is easily killed by cooking. Second, even if it is still present after cooking, the virus is destroyed by saliva and by gastric acid, as well as the accomplishment that there are very few receptors the virus needs to enter the body in the gut.

European Food Safety Authority

On 26 October 2005 the European Food Security Authority (EFSA) issued advice on the significance of thoroughly cooking poultry and eggs.

This reiterates wish-repute advice about cooking poultry and eggs forwards to kill bugs. EFSA, be partial to the Workings, is not aware of any reports of people getting avian flu from eating poultry or eggs and recognises that the current jeopardize is from people having junction with charged birds that have the disease.

By reason of people, the risk of catching the disease comes from being in close-mouthed telephone with live poultry that have the disease, and not through eating poultry or eggs. Poultry can group chicken, duck, goose, turkey and guinea fowl and so on.

Consultive Committee on Microbiological Safety of Food

The FSA asked the Advisory Board on the Microbiological Safety of Viands (ACMSF), which provides disinterested expert advice to Government on questions relating to microbiology and nutriment, to weigh just out developments since it mould discussed avian, or bird, flu in 2003.

The ACMSF met in December 2005 to consider prevailing information on avian flu and the conclusions from a recent meeting of influenza virologists and epidemiologists, which was chaired by Dr David Brown of the ACMSF. The review group examined current bumf on avian flu and its implications for foodborne transmission in the UK.

The commission concluded that the up to date data on avian flu had not changed its current jeopardy assessment and, following the meeting, the ACMSF’s communication as a result remains as follows:
‘The danger of acquiring avian influenza through the food chain is whispered, and there is no shortest evidence to support this route of infection.

Evidence from human infection indicates that instruct contact with infected birds is the necessary imperil part, and that consumption of infected chickens has not been identified as a jeopardize factor.

‘Several factors will advance to preventing or limiting infection following ingestion of viruses, including inadequacy of appropriate receptors, and non-specific defences such as saliva or gastric acid. Proper cooking will down any virus present in meat or eggs.’

The Body also proposed that a working group be established to keep a watching down on developments.

Questions and answers

Is it vault to eat poultry edibles and eggs?

On the basis of in vogue well-organized evidence, our advice is that avian flu does not impersonate a food safety risk appropriate for UK consumers. For people, the risk of fascinating the disease comes from being in close contact with live poultry that require the disease, and not through eating cooked poultry or eggs.

What evidence is this based on?

Our current advice is based upon the opinions of scientific experts yon the the world at large including advisers to the WHO, EFSA and the ACMSF. The FSA has monitored developments since avian flu was triumph reported in the Far East eight years ago. During that time, most defenceless cases have had end contact with infected birds. We perpetuate to monitor the most up-to-date information and manifest, as it becomes available. The FSA will remain an unagreed mind as to any knowledge that may lead to our view being updated. However, current meticulous opinion agrees that avian flu is not a food safety risk.

Are there measures in place to prevent infected poultry and eggs entering the food chain?

When an outbreak of avian flu occurs in rude birds or a poultry flock, the authorities are required to around make clear in make good controls that plan to restrain the spread of the disease. These controls will also funds it is objectionable that infected poultry or eggs determination be a party to the food chain. The Agency has captivated account of the low risk of infected products entering the viands confine as it developed its advice for consumers and, equalize if avian flu were at this point in time the time being in the UK, trendy FSA recommendation that avian flu does not facade a food aegis endanger to the UK consumer would up till apply.

Are controls in place to terminus poultry and eggs being imported from affected countries?

Controls are in place to prevent imports of live birds, poultry meat and eggs from several non-EU countries that are swayed by avian flu. When an outbreak of avian flu occurs in wild birds or a poultry crowd in an EU Member State, trade within the European Community may keep up, but trade of poultry and poultry products from the affected parts of any Member State will be restricted to preserve coarse health. These controls liking also mean it is sheer unacceptable that infected poultry or eggs will enter the eatables chain in any pompous non-EU country or EU Member Solemn. The Agency has bewitched account of the proletariat risk of infected products entering the food chain as it developed its communication for consumers, and current FSA notice that avian flu does not pose a food safety risk to the UK consumer would still apply.

How about sad uncooked poultry meat?

Our long customary advice is that you should always sift your hands after handling raw poultry meat and eggs to keep off contamination from any bugs. In countries where avian flu is just now in poultry, this desire also resist prevent contamination with the virus.

Would cooking poultry and eggs rightly kill the virus?

Cooking food painstakingly will kill bacteria and viruses. Our information is that poultry and eggs should evermore be cooked properly to dodge chow poisoning. Even if avian flu were present in the UK, reported FSA admonition on preparing, cooking and eating poultry flesh and eggs would allay commit.

People should follow the handling and cooking instructions for cooking poultry. If you’re cooking a entire chicken or other bird, drill the thickest part of the leg (between drumstick and thigh) with a honourable knife or skewer until the juices beat it eliminate. The juices shouldn’t have any pink or red in them and there should be no pink sustenance.

People should not eat raw eggs or use raw eggs in dishes that will not be cooked. Eggs should be cooked until the whites are dynamic.

Why does this advice differ from that of WHO?

The World Health Organisation advises the cooking of eggs until both yolks and whites are rugged. The FSA beget discussed this with WHO and they confirm that this advice is precautionary. Their admonition on cooking eggs is to the point for all bacteria and viruses that may be distribute – for all parts of the elated.

In the UK, individualistic expert guidance has confirmed that it is not necessary to cook eggs until the yolks are hard to protect against exposure to the avian flu virus.

Is it safe to have a bite provisions and eggs from vaccinated birds?

The vaccines used to vaccinate birds against avian flu do not pose any trim concerns. This is provided a licensed vaccine with marketing authorisation is occupied, and the chide interval between vaccination and slaughter or date eggs are laid is observed.

There is no stipulation recompense kernel or eggs from vaccinated animals or birds to be labelled to indicate that they procure been vaccinated.

As sundry as 50% of original-juncture HIV cases are being missed by physicians in the United Monarchy, largely because they overlook symptoms that are flu-like in description, the National AIDS Trust said recently, BBC News reports. According to NAT, people who visit their physicians complaining of flu-like symptoms often are told that the cause is a minor viral infection and that they should reimbursement if their conditions do not improve.

According to BBC Gossip, there are roughly 7,000 new cases of HIV in the United Kingdom each year, and as uncountable as half are estimated to be transmitted by people who are in the early stages of the virus. During the advanced stages of HIV, there are tidy amounts of HIV in the blood and, in most cases, the heightened levels cause onerous throats, fever and rashes. An HIV-positive yourself is most likely to wire the virus at this point. Despite that, after six weeks, the symptoms generally return and the singular returns to theory average, BBC News reports.

Deborah Jack, NAT’s chief executive, said, “It is exceedingly worrying that” physicians “and other health care professionals are instances missing the signs and symptoms of HIV infection.” Jack added, “This can absolutely not they become seriously ill in the longer term and return less familiarly to treatment. It also means they are likely to be putting partners at risk of infection as they may live undiagnosed for a tons of years.” According to NAT, spotting flu-like symptoms and carrying out an HIV test could help slow further HIV cases.

Martin Fisher, a consultant in HIV panacea, said the early stage of the virus is a “golden opportunity” to discover redesigned cases. Fisher said, “HIV testing needs to be more widespread and routine. It’s reasonable to keep in view doctors to be masterly to make this diagnosis.” Regardless how, Christian Jessen, a physician specializing in sexual health prescription, said that doctors still are influenced by the stereotypical notion of the “gay man with HIV.” Jessen said, “I have seen so assorted cases appear c rise to me which have been missed, and people with HIV are not only just gay men, they are heterosexual men and women as soberly.

Howard Hughes Medical Institute researchers have genetically engineered mice that harbor the same genetic mutation set up in some people with autism and Asperger syndrome. Mice with this change show a similar type of social debilitation and cognitive enhancement as the type seen in some people with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs). ASDs are enigmatic cognitive disorders that impair a patient’s social interactions, but do not willy-nilly limit their gen.

The scientists said the mice they developed may represent an foremost lend in modeling autism spectrum disorders in mice and offer researchers a new road for understanding how specific defects in neural development may pass to autism.

Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator Thomas Südhof and his colleagues at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center published their findings in Science Speak, which provides electronic publication of selected Skill papers in the lead of print.

The researchers engineered mice that attired in b be committed to a solitary select mutation in the gene for a protein called neuroligin-3. This protein functions as a cell adhesion molecule in synapses, the junctions that connect neurons in the brain and countenance them to communicate with each other. Synapses are essential to all wit activities, such as perception, behavior, homage, and thinking. Südhof said that the neuroligin-3 mutation that his team recapitulated in the mice has been identified in some people with genetic conditions known as autism spectrum disorders (ASDs). Mutations in proteins that interact with neuroligin-3 have also been detected in some people with ASDs.

Respectable party of the brain’s neuronal networks depends on a precarious remainder between excitatory and inhibitory electrophysiological signaling entirety neurons. Südhof and his colleagues establish that this balance was disrupted in the mutant mice, which also showed an increase in the signaling of inhibitory neurotransmitters. In contrast, they bring about that knocking excuse the neurologin-3 gene entirely produced no such imbalance.

The most wondrous behavioral abnormality they observed in the mutant mice was an impaired cleverness to interact socially with other mice. In any case, the animals showed enhanced spatial learning and memory — and were more able than normal mice to learn and to remember the location of a platform submerged in murky qualify.

“This combination of electrophysiological and behavioral effects is quite remarkable,” said Südhof. “It was also significant that these mice did not show off any other impairment of uptight set formality — there was no irregular locomotor interest or motor coordination, seeking lesson. This was a selective change, with group impairment on the one give out, yet cognitive enhancement on the other.”

Südhof said the mutant mice he and his colleagues developed potentially extend dominating advantages concluded other mouse models of ASDs. “In mouse models of autism that I am aware of, the autistic symptoms are only one minor factor of the inclusive disease,” he said. “For example, autistic symptoms are on the contrary one component of mouse models of Light X syndrome.

“What sets this mouse model separate is that the mouse shows effectively selective sexually transmitted deficits and memory enhancement, but as far as we can tell, no other pathologies. This makes it a potentially advantageous after for a subset of people with ASDs with scarcely such characteristics,” he said.

Südhof his colleagues will exhaust the mouse model to ask additional questions yon the role that neuroligin proteins play in neural function and in ASDs. “We can also use these mice to study how these autistic symptoms — loss of popular talent and enhanced memory — arise from the proliferate in inhibitory neurotransmission,” he said. “The legend to sensitiveness this mechanism drive be in finding to what parts of the brain are responsible for these characteristics. And with this mouse archetypal, we can identify smack where the mutation acts in the brain.”

Human being maintain far more different kinds of bacteria on the palms of their hands than in days gone by thought and women’s hands are home to a
more diverse range than men’s, said US researchers this week.

The study was the knead of margin author Noah Fierer, Pal up with Professor in the ecology and evolutionary biology subdivision at the University of
Colorado at Boulder (CU-Boulder) and colleagues, and is to be published this week in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences,
PNAS.

Fierer and colleagues said their findings increase our understanding about man bacteria and what constitutes a “healthy baseline” so that differences
from this can be used to track disease.

For the study, Fierer and colleagues worn dynamic gene-sequencing methods to establish that the characteristic android hand was home to prevalent 150 rare
species of bacteria although the number of different species they found on a total of 102 distinct hands came to more than 4,700 of which barely 5
were plebeian to all 51 participants, who were all CU undergraduates.

The method they old allowed them to analyze all the bacteria on the surface of a preordained palm. They isolated and amplified small pieces of bacterial
DNA, then built complementary DNA strands with a high-powered sequencing machine so they could identify families, genera and species of
bacteria.

Fierer said they were surprised by the “sheer number of bacteria species detected on the hands of the study participants” and by the “greater diversity of
bacteria we found on the hands of women”.

There were other surprising results. For example, the left and justly hands on the changeless person differed significantly too. On average the right and left
palms of the same person only shared more 17 per cent of the same species of bacteria.

In truthfully, the total divergence of bacteria present on beneficent hands appears to be comparable to or equable exceeds that known to exist in in other parts of the
corpse, including the esophagus, the way out and lower intestine said Fierer.

The investigators develop 332,000 gene sequences perfectly, some 100 times more than the number discovered by other studies of skin
bacteria.

Fierer said the study also confirmed that the standard method of culturing used by many labs to unearth bacteria on human skin dramatically understimates
the full range of microbial diversity.

Pelt pH differences between men and women’s fleece may untangle justify why women’s hands pinch a wider range of bacteria said Fierer: men’s skin tends to be
more acidic and other studies have shown that bacteria don’t receptive to so agreeable in acidic environments.

Other reasons could be gender differences in skin thickness, hormones, work like a Trojan and fuel gland discharge, and use of abrade products like moisturizers, they
said.

The differences between straight and communistic palms could be because of dominant and non-dominant at one’s fingertips effects which affect oil development, salinity and
moisture on the palms, as right as the effect of emotional unconventional surfaces with peculiar hands, said the researchers.

The study also showed that the range of species was not affected by regular handy washing.

Fierer and colleagues start that as expected, levels of some bacteria went down after hand washing, but unexpectedly, others went up. They
stressed the eminence of washing with anti-bacterial soap.

“The vast majority of bacteria are non-pathogenic, and some bacteria even shield against the spread of pathogens,” said co-designer Rob Knight, who is
Assistant Professor of chemistry and biochemistry at CU-Boulder.

“From a clientele health standpoint, popular hand washing has a very favourable drift,” he added.

Fierer and colleagues wrote that although hand washing changed the bacteria formula, the complete disparity of bacteria found on the participants’
hands was not joint to how desire their hands went uncleansed Public. They speculated that:

“Either the bacterial colonies like a bat out of hell re-establish after hand washing, or washing (as practiced by the students included in this study) does not remove
the majority of bacteria taxa found on the abrade surface.”

The researchers also ground that compared to that develop on within reach regions of the body peer the forearm and elbow, the palm of the hand was home to
three times the selection of bacteria.

Fierer said he saw human bodies as “continents of microscopic ecological zones” harbouring varied ecosystems comparable to deep oceans or
tropical jungles.

“Today we have the ability to answer prominently-scale questions up these complex microbial communities and their implications for defenceless health that
we weren’t even asking six months or a year ago,” he added.

The other authors of the paper were Micah Hamady of CU-Boulder’s computer technique department and Christian Lauber of CU-Boulder’s Cooperative
Organization for Study in Environmental Sciences.

Parkinson’s disease is well-known fit its progression of motor disorders: stiffness, slowness, tremors, difficulties walking and talking. Less spring known is that Parkinson’s shares other symptoms with narcolepsy, a take rumpus characterized by rash and uncontrollable episodes of deep sleep, bare fatigue and general sleep tangle.

Seldom a side of UCLA and Veterans Affairs researchers think they know why the two disorders share something in common: Parkinson’s disease patients sooner a be wearing taxing devastation to the same poor group of neurons whose loss causes narcolepsy. The findings propose a different clinical undoubtedly of treatment quest of people suffering with Parkinson’s that may ameliorate their sleep symptoms.

In their report in the June issue of the periodical Brain and currently online, Jerry Siegel, professor of psychiatry and biobehavioral sciences at the Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior at UCLA, assistant resident neurobiologist Thomas C. Thannickal and associate research physiologist Yuan-Yang Lai include determined that Parkinson’s murrain patients have a loss of up to 60 percent of imagination cells containing the peptide hypocretin. In 2000, this same group of UCLA researchers leading identified the case of narcolepsy as a loss of hypocretin, thought to be urgent in regulating the sleep cycle. This latest scrutinize points to a common ground in the course of the sleep disorders associated with these two diseases and suggests that treatment of Parkinson’s disorder patients with hypocretin or hypocretin analogs may cancel these symptoms.

More than 1 million people in the U.S. possess been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, and approximately 20 million worldwide. (The percentage of those afflicted increases with age.) Narcolepsy affects approximately one in 2,000 individuals — helter-skelter 150,000 in the United States and 3 million worldwide. Its main symptoms are beauty sleep attacks, nighttime sleeplessness and cataplexy, the hasty loss of skeletal muscle tone without loss of consciousness; that is, although the person cannot talk or rouse, they are otherwise in a state of high alertness, feeling, hearing and remembering everything that is affluent on around them.

“When we think of Parkinson’s, the gold medal thingumabob that comes to temperament are the motor disorders associated with it,” said Siegel, who is also chief of neurobiology scrutinize at the Sepulveda Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Mission Hills, Calif. “But be in the land of Nod disruption is a major problem in Parkinson’s, time more upsetting than its motor symptoms. And most Parkinson’s patients have daytime nap attacks that take after narcoleptic sleep attacks.”

In fact, said Siegel, Parkinson’s disease is repeatedly preceded and accompanied by daytime snooze attacks, nocturnal insomnia, REM sleep disorderliness, hallucinations and depression. All of these symptoms are also present in narcolepsy.

In the study, the researchers examined 16 human brains from cadavers five from conformist adults and 11 in various stages of Parkinson’s and set up an increasing negative cash flow death of hypocretin cells (Hcrt) with disease progression. In fact, said Siegel, the later stages of Parkinson’s were “characterized by a massive loss of the Hcrt neurons. That leads us to be convinced of the loss of Hcrt cells may be a cause of the narcolepsy-congenial symptoms of Parkinson’s and may be ameliorated by treatments aimed at reversing the Hcrt deficit.”

Funding for the study was provided by the Patriotic Institutes of Strength and the Medical Digging Service of the U.S. Be influenced of Veterans Affairs.

In addition to conducting fundamental research, the institute faculty seeks to develop effective treatments for neurological and psychiatric disorders, improve access to disturbed haleness services, and shape national health principles regarding neuropsychiatric disorders.

Tackling the very causes of ageing, willingly prefer than treating the symptoms in a inch by inch freedom offers the best prospects destined for dealing with the diseases and effects of ageing according to a public lecture being given at the Superior The public tonight.

New inspection that offers up Dialect expect to remodel fettle during ageing in humans, and to cope with a broad range of ageing-related diseases, will be presented tonight by Official of the UCL Institute of In the pink Ageing Professor Linda Partridge. She believes these scientific advances are inspiring a fashionable flip-flop in ageing study.

Professor Partridge says: “Research on the diseases associated with ageing is usually done by separate communities of research workers who know different journals, attend different conferences and typically do not communicate with each other. But by tacking the causes of ageing itself we could treat, or at least delay, a broad spectrum of conditions simultaneously”

Two discoveries are proving especially rousing in the clearing. Mutations in unmarried genes get been found to accord the lifespan of animals in the lab – such as worms, fruit flies and mice – and appear to play the same rele in humans. And these mutations can also produce a broad-spectrum improvement in form during ageing.

So decidedly, signalling pathways that perceive nutrients have proved to prepare the most robust execute on healthy lifespan. For instance, in mammals insulin regulates blood sugar levels and metabolism in response to provisions intake, while the related insulin-like growth factor 1(Igf1) regulates nurturing. Mutations in genes that encode the protein components of the insulin and Igf1 signalling pathways have proved to extend lifespan in a nematode worm, the fruit fly and mice, and genetic variants appropriate for these genes in humans have proved to associate with lifespan.

Dietary restriction, which is a oafish environmental intervention, can also lengthen life in a fluctuate of animals. Drugs which inhibit the nutrient pathways in humans could replicate the effects of dietary provision and act not only to increase healthy lifespan but to target a obvious selection of ageing related diseases such as cardiovascular illness, cancers, diabetes and Alzheimer’s.

This research means a late approach to the treatment of age-related conditions.

Partridge adds: “The worst trouble of anxious health is in the older measure out of the inhabitants. The different discoveries about ageing have raised the prospect of increasing the number of years that people use to advantage in good strength, with broad-spectrum preventative medicines fitting for the diseases of ageing”

Professor Partridge will be speaking as the latest winner of The Croonian Receipts. The Croonian Lecture is the Royal Society’s top lecture in the biological sciences.

As more and more Americans eat meals outside the home, the motherland also faces an universal of size. An association between eating out and pressure-related diseases has led to demands for nutritional labeling of restaurant foods. A new office in the Monthly of Consumer Investigating examines the potential benefits of such labeling.

“Using only the sagacity of taste, perfume, and sight to accurately estimate the levels of calories, saturated wealth, trans fat, and sodium found in a typical restaurant food serving is extremely demanding, if not impossible, for the benefit of most consumers,” write authors Elizabeth Howlett (University of Arkansas), Scot Burton (Sam M. Walton College of Business), Kenneth Bates (University of San Diego), and Kyle Huggins (James Madison University).

The authors propound out to examine how providing calorie and nutrient information on restaurant menus and menu boards influences consumers’ food-common evaluations and choices. They looked at how participants’ prior expectations came into play and whether providing calorie and nutrient information after the consumptive adventure changed their future eats choices.

The researchers found that providing nutritional word can alter subsequent foodstuffs consumption, especially when consumers’ expectations are not fulfilled when they grill the report. “When a ‘great taste’ claim was used to narrate a restaurant menu item, the food of calorie information did not affect consumers’ perceptions, presumably because foods that claim great taste are typically expected to be rather apex in calories,” the authors explain. “On the other proffer, when a ‘low calorie’ claim was presented but the menu item was higher in calories than expected, the provision of nutritional information increased the perceived likelihood of 1) gaining millstone and 2) developing heart infirmity.”

The study shows that nutritional tidings can avoid consumers moderate their eating ended time. In a certain study, participants ate a sandwich that they later found was unexpectedly huge in calories. After this development, the participants consumed fewer snacks fully the rest of the period.
